Are you “Happy, Free, Confused, and Lonely at the Same Time”?

I’ve read a few things recently that affirm I am not the only one feeling like, “Geeze, Louise! Being a young 20-something is kind of hard!” On top of figuring out how I am going to pay rent next month, while still attempting to have some sort of fashion sense and have fun…oh, and eat, [...]

5 Ways to FIX Sundays

In college, I would wake up on Sunday mornings and think, “Oh noooo! The beautiful, blissful weekend is gone! UGH!” Dreading the homework I had been putting off since Friday, the mound of laundry needing to be washed, the bedroom that was aching to be cleaned, and all of the emails awaiting me in my inbox, I [...]

A Get Smart Girl’s Summer in Cali – Part I

I remember being told that I should apply for a summer internship. “It will be good for your resume.” “You can explore other areas of student affairs.” “It will make you more marketable in the job search.” All of that sounded convincing enough to me. And besides, it’s not like I had anything else to [...]

What is Get Smart?

Get Smart is powerful. Get Smart is fierce. Get Smart is extraordinary. Get Smart has challenged me to awaken the thoughts that are often drowned out by the everyday hustle and bustle of being a 20-something graduate student. My constantly quick pace sometimes results in a lack of honest reflection about who I am and where I [...]

Get Smart about Controlling Your Own Tomorrow

I am all about being flexible with the relationship between your heart and mind. Painting a beautiful passionate mess all over the picture perfect life you’ve created in your head. But allowing yourself to be a rag doll with no purpose, being pulled in thousands of different directions, is not what I am getting at. [...]

Lost in the “Real World”? Get Smart and Find Your Calling

In talking to many of my friends, who have recently graduated from college as I have, it seems like life has become vastly different than it was a year or two ago. Some of us are sitting behind computer screens, working 9-5 (or, more realistically, 8-8). Some of us are running from field work to [...]

Get Smart and Create your Own Sparkle!

“Keep your face always toward the sunshine - and shadows will fall behind you.” - Walt Whitman Stress, Anger, Anxiousness, Negativity... There are millions of things that bring negative thoughts and emotions into our lives, and oftentimes those feelings are not fleeting. They set up shop and stay a while. They feed into one another, [...]

Get Smart about Your Life Compass

"After all, things change, so do cities, people come into your life and they go. But it's comforting to know that the ones you love are always in your heart... and if you're very lucky, a plane ride away." - Sex and the City There comes a day in every girl’s life when her biggest [...]

Get Smart by Getting Healthy

While we have taken steps in the right direction when it comes to body image, the messages to women are still quite confusing. Things like the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty; the truth behind photoshopped pictures and the millions of blog posts, advertisements and campaigns promoting a healthy body image have communicated that every body is [...]

Chase Change: Get Smart & Grow!

“So fill up your lungs and just run, but always be chasing the sun." - Sara Barielles If you are like me, the thought of seeing the world, moving some place new, experiencing life in a completely new environment and soaking up the sun somewhere amazing (like Southern California) is spellbinding. The idea of a [...]
