Okay, let’s #getreal…

A few months ago, I wrote an article about creating healthy habits by establishing day-to-day routines.   When I wrote that article, I was on “health high” and I was just feeling great.  I was in a good, fitspirational place.

Today I write to be real and admit- SPOILER ALERT: it’s not always rainbows and gumdrops (healthy ones of course).  I have been working on becoming a healthier person for a few years now and the reality is: a. some days are easier than others and b. you have to work hard every day to keep yourself goin’.

This past month, I came to a few realizations…

1.  If something isn’t working out, FIX IT!

I realized when I was getting home from work, I got too lazy and made excuses not to go to the gym, so I told myself, “Self, bring your work out stuff to work, and go straight to the gym after work.” My exercise time has improved considerably.

2.  DON’T DRIVE YOURSELF CRAZY

I tried to eat extremely “clean” at the beginning of the month, and I did very well for a whole week.  But then the weekend came.  And I unleashed.  The takeaway I want to pass along to the Get Smart community is that it is so important to treat yourself once in a while (I am going to do so twice a week) to prevent burnout.  Same goes for exercise.  Don’t force yourself to make it to the gym every single day.  It isn’t realistic (for everyone).  Set a goal, and don’t beat yourself up.

3.  CH-CH-CHANGE IT UP!

It really is so important to change up both your eating and exercise routines.  Eating the same foods over and over will make you really dislike your meals.  Add some pizzazz to your meals or snacks!  Try something new!  And when you exercise, try a new class at the gym or even change the order in which you do your workouts.  Not only will it be more fun, it will challenge your muscles (muscle confusion!) and prevent plateau-ing. Ain’t nobody got time for dat. Am I right?

To quote the legendary rule #76 from a 2005 movie,

This will be my motto for MOvember. What will yours be?

Until next time, cheers to a healthier you and me!

Xoxo,
